FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING POTENTIAL OF TERMINALIA TOMENTOSA (Roxb.) BARK-AN IN VITRO STUDY
Department of Pharmacognosy, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal – 576 104.
Abstract Cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been implicated in several diseases and hence natural antioxidants have significant importance in human health. The present study was carried out to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and reactive oxygen species scavenging activities of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Terminalia tomentosa bark. Scavenging ability of the extracts for radicals like DPPH, ABTS, Superoxide, Nitric oxide, Ortho-phenenthroline, Hydrogen peroxide were performed. Both ethanolic and aqueous extracts exhibited antioxidant activity, with IC50 values at 17.13 and 38.8ug/mL for DPPH, 17.11 and 40.04 ug/mL for ABTS, 25.3 and 78.25 ug/mL for NO scavenging activities, 17.30 and 28.4ug/mL for superoxide assay,142.5 and 126.46ug/mL for hydrogen peroxide, 7.99 and 14.25 ug/mL for ortho-phenonthroline assay respectively in comparison with ascorbic acid as standerd. From the study it can be concluded that water and ethanol extract of the bark of Terminalia tomentosa could be a potential source of natural antioxidant in preventing or slowing the progression of age-associated oxidative stress-related degenerative diseases.
