Abstract Plants are rich in a wide variety of secondary metabolites, such as phenolic compounds, tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids, which have been found in vitro to have antimicrobial properties. Search is on for phytochemicals and "leads" which could be developed into antimicrobials. The present paper is a survey in the field of herbal disinfectants, their formulations and evaluation.
