EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF B. TOMENTOSA ON ANTI OXIDANT STATUS AND OXIDATIVE STRESS IN LIVER AND KIDNEY OF ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RATSKanakasabapathi Devaki*, Uthamaraj Beulah and Velliyur Kanniappan Gopalakrishnan
Abstract Scope: Free radicals and the associated oxidative stress induced by alloxan are implicated in eliciting pathological changes in diabetes mellitus. The study was designed to investigate the antioxidant potential of Bauhinia tomentosa aqueous extract in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods:Diabetes was induced in albino rats by the administration of alloxan (150 mg/kg-intra peritoneal injection). The rats were divided in to five groups of five animals each. Group I served as untreated control. Group II was diabetes induced. Group III and Group IV were diabetic rats received standard oral hypoglycaemic agent, glibenclamide (5mg/kg) and B. tomentosa (200mg/kg) respectively. Group V was normal rats treated with B. tomentosa (200mg/kg) alone. After the treatment period of 30 days, the levels of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase , polyphenol oxidase and non enzymatic antioxidants like glutathione, vit C and vit E in the liver and kidney tissues were assayed. Result: The results showed remarkable increase in the level of both antioxidants and reduced the level of lipid peroxidation in alloxan diabetic rats. This study indicate that aqueous extract of plant controls hyper glycaemia, improves the antioxidant status thus decrease the damage caused by oxidative stress in diabetic rats. Conclusion: The findings indicates that the oral administration of B. tomentosa for a period of 30 days significantly decreased the lipid peroxidation and increased the antioxidants, suggesting the antioxidant potential of B. tomentosa in diabetic rats.
