Abstract

EVALUATION OF PRESCRIBING PATTERN OF ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS IN A MULTISPECIALTY TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

At presently number of various classes of antimicrobials is available atmarket for the infectious diseases and other chronic diseases treatmentpurpose. So that we need an awareness of antimicrobials usage andprescribing pattern. The present study was aimed to study theprescribing pattern of antimicrobial agents in a multispeciality teachinghospital, Nellore. A prospective observational study wascarried out for3months using patient data collection proforma.The study began with theselection of the patients based on inclusion criteria followed by thecollection of all the base line parameters of patient’s demographicdetails, Medical and Medication history, Duration of hospitalization,Diagnosis, Prescription order. In prescriptions the number ofantimicrobials prescribed, their dose, dosage formulations, route ofadministration, frequency and duration of treatment was observed. The number of defineddaily doses (DDD) and prescribed daily doses (PDD) per patient was calculated for eachantimicrobial prescribed. Descriptive statistics were applied to the collected data and analysedusing Microsoft Excel software. A total of 155 patients were prescribed with antibiotics, out ofthem 33 % were male and 67 % were female. The average number of drugs per prescription was 3.87%. The average number of antimicrobials per patient was 3.22%. The commonly prescribed antibiotics were Betalactams(63.83%). Injectable preparations (14%) and 15% of antimicrobials with fixed dose combinations were observed. DDD for Piperacillin and Tazobactum was more followed by Doxycycline.
