Abstract
Precious role of nitrogen containing heterocyclic drugs has been
available from ancient time for the treatment of microbial infections. 5-
nitroimidazoles have widened exploration yet. Right now these agents
used to cure sever treatment like anaerobic pathogenic bacteria and
protozoa. 5-nitroimidazoles are a well-established group of
antiprotozoal and antibacterial agents that inhibit the growth of both
anaerobic bacteria and certain anaerobic protozoa, such as
Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia.
Satranidazole is a type of antiprotozoal drug which belongs to the 5-
nitroimidazole group. It is highly effective, well accepted and
clinically useful against protozoa. It is two times more active than other nitroimidazole
against amoebiasis and giardiasis. It is also more active against anaerobes than other nitrogen
containing imidazoles. The present review provides a brief account of various works already
done on satranidazole drug.
