ALARMING RISE IN SELF-MEDICATION OF MULTI-VITAMIN, CALCIUM AND FOOD SUPPLEMENT IN KARACHI

Abstract
Introduction: Self-medication is normal practice in Pakistan. Selfmedication of multi-vitamins, calcium and food supplements is common practice in Pakistan due to ignorance about the side effects of drugs. Especially, young age is a key period which goes one step forward towards self-medication. The trend of self-medication is a dangerous phenomenon which is increasing day by day without knowing the ultimate consequences. Goal of study: This aim of study is the self-medication of multivitamin, calcium and dietary supplements among the large section of people. Result: A survey has been conducted among 100 people to ascertain the unit of self- medication. For this purpose, a survey was designed to conduct fresh census from different parts of Karachi (Pakistan). Conclusion: In conclusion, survey study showed that self-medications of multivitamin, calcium and food supplements are rapidly increased in Karachi. The result showed that the ratio of self-medication of supplements is greater in students in age group 26-36. The greater source of knowledge is through internet. Discussion: The irrational use of multivitamin, calcium and food supplements was found to be high and it can be emphasize the need of comprehensive measures, giving information to others, training and council ling the students in school college and universities.
