Abstract
Delivery of drugs through the skin has been always a challenging area for research due to barrier properties exhibit by the outermost layer of skin stratum corneum. In the last two decades, the transdermal drug delivery system has become a proven technology that offers significant clinical benefits over other dosage forms. Because transdermal drug delivery offers controlled as well as predetermined rate of release of the drug into the patient, it able to maintain steady state blood concentration. An advantage of a transdermal drug delivery route over other types of medication delivery such as oral, topical, intravenous, intramuscular, etc. is that the patch provides a controlled release of the medication into the patient, usually through either a porous membrane covering a reservoir of medication or through body heat melting thin layers of medication embedded in the adhesive.A wide variety of pharmaceuticals are now available in transdermal patch form. This review emphasizes the three generations of transdermal drug delivery which start a new era of delivery of drug.Transdermal Drug Delivery System is the system in which the delivery of the active ingredients of the drug occursthrough the skin. Transdermal drug delivery system can improve the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the drugsbecause drug delivered through the skin at a predetermined and controlled rate. Skin is the important site of drugapplication for both the local and systemic effects. Skin of an average adult body covers a surface of approximately2 m2 and receives about one-third of the blood circulating through the body.
