STANDARDIZATION OF CISSAMPELOS PAREIRA: A NEW BOON

Abstract

The aim of the study is to cover the Pharmacognostical and preliminary phytochemical screening of Cissampelos pareira Linn. This plant belongs to the family Menispermaceae is a sub-erect or climbing herb, known as ambastha or laghupatha in Indian traditional medicine. The plant has many valuable medicinal properties. Pharmacognostical study included macroscopical characters and physico-chemical constants. Preliminary phytochemical screening includes phytochemical Extraction and phytochemical testing. Extraction was done by cold percolation process by using Chloroform, Methanol and water as solvents. Preliminary phytochemical studies show the presence of carbohydrates, flavanoids, alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, proteins and amino acids. The presence of secondary plant metabolites explains that the plant must have valuable medicinal properties which must be explored. Above studied Pharmacognostical and Phytochemical parameters are used to check its quality, purity and for its identification.
