Kadam vaishali S* , Bharakhad Vishvanath S, Jadhav suryakant B, Kute arun, Chintale Ashwini G

Abstract

Poor water solubility is the major drawback for the various types of drugs and many approaches have been introduced for the solubility enhancement of such drugs. Solid dispersions have been known to be one amongst the recent means of improving the dissolution rate by enhancement of solubility, and hence the bioavailability of poorly water soluble drugs. According, to – Chiou and Riegeman Solid dispersions are “The dispersion of one or more active ingredients in an inert carrier or matrix, where the active ingredients could exist in finely crystalline, solubilised or amorphous state.” solid dispersion is a very useful method for pharmaceutical point of view because of its capability to solve the solubility problems by using solid dispersion method. The present article reviews the basic concept about solid dispersion, various types of solid dispersion, and criteria of solvent Selection, the methods of preparation, characterization, their advantages, limitations, applications, future prospect and various types of marketed preparations.

Keywords: solid dispersion, solubility enhancement, selection of carrier
