MECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF MINIPLATES USED IN MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
Dr. N. Junior Sundresh, *Nithin Das M., Dr. R. Jayakrishnan and Dr. Anoop Kumar
Abstract Injury of the facial skeleton has progressively occupied a high percentage of trauma due to vehicular accidents, non vehicular impacts and alterations. There has been a constant endeavor to adopt treatment methods which approach perfection with respect to aesthetic and functional demands. The modern fracture fixation is plating techniques by Hansmann in 1886. Miniplates are now using the fracture fixation. Two types of miniplates are commonly available; that is Stainless steel plates and Titanium plates. The aims of the study is to help the surgeons to give maximum quality of the plates to the patients by assess the bending strength, Tensile strength values and the mechanical characteristics of the most commonly used and commercially available miniplates. to find the strength of the Two types of miniplates such as Stainless steel and Titanium plates; undergone certain types of bend test with an Istron universal testing machine 4206 at room temperature. Different types of bend test conducted to both Stainless steel and Titanium miniplates. The test gives a result as the stainless steel plates in the study were greater in strength than Titanium plates. The titanium plates however, were less rigid and less stiff indicating their greater case of contouring. These plates would be more forgiving to a less than perfect operative technique than the Stainless steel plate. The result suggests that when the plates tested in the study are applied clinically, the chances of their mechanical failure would be very less. Keywords: .
