SHALAKYA TANTRA IN SUSHRUTA SAMHITA- A LITERARY REVIEW

Abstract Shalakya Tantra is an important branch of Ayurveda which deals with the study and treatment of diseases of eye, ear, nose, teeth, throat, head and mouth. Acharya Dalhana explained Shalakya Tantra as- “Shalakayah Yatkarma Shalakyam, Tat Pradhanam Tantram Shalakyam”. it means where Shalakas (rod like instruments) are used for treatment purpose and branch of Ayurveda which deals with such instruments and their uses for treatment procedures is known as Shalakya Tantra. In present era it is scattered in various treatises of Ayurveda. Major part of Shalakya Tantra is present in Sushruta Samhita but here it is also in scattered form. Here in this article it is our simple effort to enlighten all those topics of Shalakya Tantra which are present at different places in Sushruta Samhita. Our aims are to find out all the topics of Shalakya Tantra in Sushruta Samhita and show the importance of Sushruta Samhita.
