SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL STUDY OF SOME TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES OF BIDENTATE CHALCONE LIGAND
B. H. Jawale, Y. D. Mane, Y. P. Sarnikar, B. C. Khade and S. M. Lonkar*
Abstract Transition metal complexes containing bidentate O,O donar ligand, 4-hydroxy-3-[3-(3,4,5-trimethoxy phenyl)-acryloyl]-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one derived from 3-acetyl-6-methyl-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione(dehydroacetic acid) and 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzaldehyde, have beensynthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, magnetic succeptibility, UV-visible, IR, 1H-NMR, Mass spectroscopy.X-ray diffraction analysis & antimicrobial activity. Analytical &spectral data, the stoichiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:2(metal: ligand). The physic-chemical data suggest a distortedoctahedral geometry for the Cu (II) complexes and an octahedralgeometry for all the other complexes. The synthesized ligand and its metal complexes werescreened for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity against several humanpathogenic bacteria and fungi. It has been found that some of the complexes were active &show higher activity than the free ligand. Metal chelation affects significantly bioactivebehaviour of the organic ligands.
