Abstract
5-[(Phenyliminoethyl)] 3-hydroxy phenol [PIEHP], a new analytical
reagent is proposed as a sensitive spectrophotometric reagent for Fe
(III). The reagent PIEHP is selective and free from interference of most
of the ions. It is a Schiff base and synthesized in the laboratory and
characterized by NMR, IR and C,H,N elemental analysis. A selective
spectrophotometric method is presented for the trace determination of
Fe(III) using PIEHP as spectrophotometric reagent (λmax = 430 nm) in
acidic aqueous solution (pH = 3.0). The Beer’s law is obeyed in the
concentration range from 1 to 5 ppm. The PIEHP forms a 1:2 violet
coloured complex. The Sandell’s Sensitivity is 0.07692 μg cm-2 with
molar absorptivity 0.726 x 104 L mol-1 cm–1. The proposed method has been successfully
applied to the determination of vanadium in alloy. The precision and the accuracy obtained
were satisfactory for its use in the concerned industry.
