ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF PSIDIUM GUAJAVA VARIETIES AGAINST SELECTED BACTERIAL PATHOGENS
Dr. Lilly Nathan*, Singh SN and Nathan LS
Abstract
The methanolic extracts of young leaves and fresh barks of Psidium
guajava (var. Safeda, Surkha and L-49) were evaluated for their
antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus
mutans, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella
pneumoniae and Salmonella typhi. The methanolic extracts of tested
plant varieties showed significant inhibition against all the tested
pathogens except P. aeruginosa. The Surkha variety was found to be
most potent against tested pathogens. MIC values showed that bark has
higher antimicrobial activity than the leaves of the selected plants.
Keywords: Psidium guajava, methanolic extracts, antibacterial activities.
