Abstract
Introduction: ESBL’s among common gram negative bacilli is
emerging as major problem in treatment of diseases, resistance is one of
the leading cause for increased mortality and morbidity.Present study
was undertaken to study ESBL(Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases)
detection and comparision of different phenotypic methods.
Methods:urine was collected from the catherised patients under strict
aseptic condition following standard guidelines for collection.Isolation
of bacteria was done on Blood agar Maconkeys agar and incubated
overnight at 37°C,identification of growth was done by standard
biochemical test as per guidelines and antibiotic sensitivity was done
by modified Kirby Baurers disc diffusion method as per CLSI(Clinical
Laboratory Standard Institute) guidelines.ESBL’s detected by Double – Disk diffusion test,
Disk –on- disk test, E-Test method were compared. Results: Total 50 urine samples from
catheterised patients were collected, bacterial growth was seen in 32 samples. 15 were
Escherichia coli and 17 Klebsiella species were screened for ESBL production, out of which
9 were ESBL Eschereshia coli and 8 ESBL Klebsiella strains. Male female ratio was 1:1.2.
Conclusion: prevalence of ESBL’s was found to be ( %), among different phenotypic
method of detection of ESBL’s such as Double – Disk diffusion test, Disk –on- disk test, ETest,
E test was found to be more reliable with 100% detection rate.
