A LITERARY REVIEW OF OCIMUM BASILICUM LINN (BARBARI) IN AYURVEDA

Abstract Majority of medicines mentioned in Ayurveda are plants based. Among the medicinal plants, the genus Ocimum is a well known member of Lamiaceae family. Among the species of the genus, Ocimum basilicum Linn (Barbari) is most frequently seen and extensively available plant with many medicinal properties. Various parts of the plant have been widely used in traditional medicine. The plant possesses stomachic, antipyretic, diuretic, aphrodisiac and anti dysenteric and emmenagogue pharmacological properties.[1] As the whole plant is having wonderful medicinal values and useful in various diseases hence we aim on this drug for the literary review in Ayurvedic classics which will be beneficial for the society.
